Heat Pumps Darlington
At Synergy Renewable Energy, we’ve witnessed the remarkable growth of heat pump technologies, both ground and air source. Our heat pump installation services cater to both residential and commercial properties, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing energy bills. Choose our expert team to ensure your heat pump operates efficiently, cutting down running costs and saving you money while reducing your carbon footprint.
Savings from Heat Pumps
In 2022 WWF and ScottishPower published a study about the potential benefits of low carbon technologies. While they recommended investing in multiple technologies for the best gains, they reported that air source or ground source pumps offered the best financial gains.
Heat pumps can increase property value between £4,500 – £8,000, offering a gain of 1.7% to 3.0%. This is incredible value for your Darlington home. Compared to old gas boilers, they can reduce your bill by £117 per year.
Suitable for Every Home
Through their Electrification of Heat project, Catapult has found that pumps are versatile and can be successfully installed in Victorian mid-terraces and pre-WWII semi-detached houses. The EoH project ensured that heat pumps were installed in Newcastle as part of a study. This study included air-source heat pumps, ground-source heat pumps, hybrid heat pumps, and other technologies like batteries.
Now we know that an air source heat pump can be installed in any property type, new or older. Though there may be occasional challenges, our professional team can work with you to install an air-source heat pump and resolve issues.

What are heat pumps?
Heat pumps use thermal energy to provide warm air and water. At Synergy Renewable Energy, we install two different systems: air source heat pumps (ASHP) and ground source heat pumps (GSHP). However, they both work via heat exchange.
According to Energy Saving Trust, warm air naturally flows to somewhere cooler. Furthermore, as the pressure of a gas increases, temperatures also rise.
When the pressure decreases, so does the temperature. Heat pumps can therefore exploit this system of heat and pressure exchange. They use a gas called a ‘refrigerant’.
When the pump compresses the refrigerant, the pressure and thus temperature rise. The heat exchanger then helps heat air or water. A valve then lowers the pressure, allowing the refrigerant to expand and cool. This cycle continues to keep your Darlington home warm year round.
What’s the difference between air source heat pumps (ASHP) and ground source heat pumps (GSHP)?
ASHP absorb heat from external air using fans. The evaporator works even in cool temperatures because of the volume of air that passes from the fan. A small amount of energy is used to maintain the pump and compressor.
A similar system is used for GSHPs, except that GSHPs are installed in a trench near your home. GSHPs use the warmth from underground pipes to heat a ‘brine’.
This brine is made up of cool water and antifreeze and passes through the heat exchanger to heat the refrigerant.
Both systems are suitable for use in Darlington, Newcastle and surrounding counties of the North East.
How do I apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Once you find an MCS certified installer, like Synergy Renewable Energy, they can advise you whether your property is eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and give you a quote.
After that point, your installer would apply for the grant, and then you would confirm that they’re acting on your behalf when you receive the Ofgem email.
What are the caveats to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
*Social housing, new build properties, and properties that already have government funding for a heat pump or biomass boiler are not eligible. Read more from the government website.
